The salt is extracted from a nearby salt dome that is millions of years old. The harbor is also the starting point for the Mariager-Handest vintage railway, which chuffs through the rolling hills with historic steam locomotives. For active holidaymakers, Mariager Fjord provides excellent conditions for kayaking and fishing, especially for sea trout. The 'Panorama Route' hiking trail features spectacular views over the water. Culinarially, the region is known for smoked fish and local specialties like Mariager bread. Access is straightforward via the E45 motorway and road 555.
