Viking Ring Fortress Fyrkat (Denmark)

Weather…

Fyrkat is a historic Viking ring fortress located near Hobro, constructed around 980 AD during the reign of King Harald Bluetooth. This fortress is one of five Danish fortifications of the Trelleborg type, characterized by their precise circular structure and strict geometric arrangement of buildings within the rampart. The site has an internal diameter of exactly 120 meters and once housed 16 identical oak longhouses arranged in four squares. Archaeological excavations revealed a nearby cemetery with 30 graves, including that of a wealthy woman identified as a völva or seeress. Today, visitors can explore a reconstructed Viking longhouse and the museum site, which provides deep insights into the military organization and daily life of the Viking Age.
