The Gudenå Delta is Denmark's only river delta that flows into a fjord, specifically the Randers Fjord in East Jutland. The Gudenå river is the longest in the country, stretching 149 kilometers and draining significant portions of central Jutland. The delta area is characterized by extensive reed beds, wet meadows, and a complex system of waterways that provide vital habitats for numerous bird species. Historically, the river served as a critical transport route for barges carrying goods between the towns of Silkeborg and Randers. The hydrological conditions in the delta are defined by the mixing of freshwater from the Gudenå and saltwater from the Kattegat, creating a brackish environment. Today, the area is under ecological protection to safeguard the biodiversity of the floodplain landscape and maintain water quality. The delta remains a popular destination for anglers and canoeists who explore its natural shoreline zones.
