Amalienborg Palace in Copenhagen is the official winter residence of the Danish Royal Family and is widely regarded as one of the finest examples of Danish Rococo architecture. The complex consists of four identical palace facades arranged around an octagonal courtyard: the palaces of Christian VII, Christian VIII, Christian IX, and Frederick VIII. Construction began in the mid-18th century according to the master plan of architect Nicolai Eigtved, and was originally intended for noble families until the Royal Family relocated here following the 1794 fire at Christiansborg Palace. At the center of the square stands the monumental equestrian statue of King Frederick V, often cited as one of the most beautiful in the world. A daily highlight for visitors is the ceremonial Changing of the Royal Guard, which takes place at noon. Parts of the palaces are open to the public as a museum, offering an intimate look at the private lives of the Danish monarchs through several generations.
