Maiko Rainforest

The Maiko Rainforest, protected by the Maiko National Park, is one of the most remote and inaccessible wilderness areas in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Spanning approximately 10,885 square kilometers, it covers parts of the North Kivu, Orientale, and Maniema provinces. The forest is characterized by rugged terrain and dense vegetation, which has historically shielded it from large-scale deforestation while simultaneously hindering scientific exploration. Maiko is a critical sanctuary for three of Congo's most iconic endemic species: the Grauer’s gorilla, the okapi, and the Congo peacock. These animals find essential refuge in the moist primary forests, which remain largely undisturbed by modern infrastructure. Established in 1970, the park faces ongoing challenges from illegal mining and the presence of armed groups within its boundaries. Nevertheless, it remains a cornerstone of the Congo Basin's biodiversity and a significant global carbon sink, vital for climate regulation.
