The Kisangani River Port is the northernmost terminus of the navigable Congo River stretch originating from Kinshasa. Located in the Tshopo Province, it sits just below the Boyoma Falls (formerly Stanley Falls), which prevent further upstream navigation. This strategic positioning makes Kisangani a critical transshipment hub for trade between the western and eastern parts of the country. Goods arriving from Kinshasa are offloaded here and transferred to trucks or the railway to bypass the falls or to reach the northeastern provinces. The port is particularly vital for the export of palm oil, rubber, and tropical timber. During the colonial era, it was a flourishing commercial center, and it remains indispensable today for supplying the region with industrial goods and fuel. The Port of Kisangani on the Congo River is the most important transshipment point in the northeastern interior, as navigation ends above the Boyoma Falls. It connects river transport with railway and road traffic for onward distribution in the region.
Visiting
The port area is partially visible from the town side, but loading zones are usually fenced off. Visitors can watch operations from nearby bridges or the Wagenia road which runs along the river.
