A quiet, historic spot that invites reflection on the region's colonial past.

Ubundu, formerly known as Ponthierville, is a strategically important port town located in the Tshopo Province of northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. The town sits above the Boyoma Falls on the Lualaba River, which constitutes the upper reach of the Congo River. Its significance is derived from the necessity to bypass the unnavigable rapids of the falls, leading to the construction of a railway link to Kisangani. This 125-kilometer rail line was completed in the early 20th century to facilitate the transport of goods between the upper and middle sections of the river. Ubundu serves as the administrative center of its namesake territory and is a major transshipment point for agricultural products and minerals. Geographically, the town marks the point where the river becomes navigable again, establishing it as a regional trade hub. The town's infrastructure reflects its colonial heritage, though it currently faces challenges from decades of neglect and the impact of regional instability.
