Coquilhatville (Mbandaka) (Congo - Kinshasa)

Weather…

Mbandaka, formerly known as Coquilhatville during the colonial era, is a major port city on the Congo River and the capital of the Équateur Province. The city was founded in 1883 by Henry Morton Stanley as Équateurville and was renamed in 1886 to honor the Belgian Governor Camille-Aimé Coquilhat. Situated at the strategic confluence of the Congo and Ruki Rivers, it has served for decades as a vital commercial hub for the export of rubber, palm oil, and timber. One of its most significant landmarks is the Eala Botanical Garden, established in 1900, which houses an extensive collection of equatorial flora and remains a center for botanical research. The city experiences a tropical rainforest climate, with high humidity and rainfall throughout the year, supporting the lush surrounding vegetation. Today, Mbandaka is an essential administrative center that plays a critical role in the regional economy and riverine transportation network of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
