Basankusu is a key town located in the heart of the Équateur Province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, serving as the administrative center of the Basankusu Territory. It is geographically positioned on the Lulonga River, a major tributary of the Congo River, at the point where the Lopori and Maringa rivers converge. This unique location historically made the town a primary hub for transporting goods from the deep rainforest to the main Congo waterway. During the colonial era, the area was significant for rubber extraction and later for large-scale palm oil plantations. In 1959, the town was established as the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Basankusu, which remains a cornerstone of the region's educational and medical infrastructure. Today, the town's economy is driven by agriculture, particularly the production of palm oil, coffee, and cocoa. The surrounding forests are of international ecological importance as they are part of the natural habitat for bonobos. The local demographic is predominantly composed of the Mongo and Ngombe peoples, who maintain a lifestyle closely integrated with the riverine and forest ecosystems.
