Starý Plzenec Rotunda (Czech Republic)

Weather…

The Rotunda of Saint Peter and Paul in Starý Plzenec is one of the most significant monuments of early medieval architecture in Bohemia, dating back to the late 10th century. It was originally built as a central component of the Hůrka fort, which served as a major administrative and religious hub for the early Přemyslid state. This circular structure is recognized as the oldest preserved Christian building in West Bohemia, constructed from massive quarry stone in a simple Romanesque style. Throughout the centuries, the rotunda survived numerous conflicts and was partially renovated in the Renaissance style during the 16th century to serve local needs. Today, it stands as a protected national cultural monument and provides crucial insights into the development of Czech statehood and early church history. Its prominent location on a hill features expansive views of the Úhlava River valley and the historic landscape.
