Rejviz Moss Lake (Czech Republic)

Weather…

The Great Moss Lake (Velké mechové jezírko) is the centerpiece of the Rejvíz National Nature Reserve in the Hrubý Jeseník Mountains. This scenic little lake lies in the middle of the largest peat bog complex in Moravia. The bog was formed after the last ice age in a shallow basin. A nature trail on a wooden boardwalk leads from the village of Rejvíz to the lake, allowing visitors to explore this unique landscape with dry feet. The water of the lake is strongly brownish in color due to humic acids and is very acidic, which is why hardly any fish live here. The surroundings are characterized by typical bog vegetation such as peat moss, sundew and dwarf pines. The silence and untouched nature give the place an almost mystical atmosphere. A legend tells of the sunken city of Hunohrad, whose bells are said to sometimes be heard from the depths of the bog.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The journey typically starts from the nearby settlement of Rejviz, from where visitors generally follow clearly marked natural forest trails leading directly into the heart of the protected peat bog area.
📅
Best season
The warmer months from late spring to early autumn are generally convenient for visiting, as the extensive wooden boardwalks might become extremely slippery or completely inaccessible under heavy winter snow.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The core of the protected area is generally traversed via a well-maintained wooden boardwalk, which protects the fragile mountain peat bog while providing a relatively flat, stable walking surface for visitors.
🎒
What to bring
Comfortable walking shoes with decent traction are generally sufficient for navigating the boardwalk, though bringing insect repellent is often a very good idea when spending time near this wetland environment.
🅿️
Parking
Designated public parking facilities are typically available in the settlement of Rejviz, which serves as the primary base and starting point for exploring the surrounding moss lake trail network.
⚠️
Safety
For personal safety and strict environmental protection, visitors are typically required to remain entirely on the wooden boardwalks and avoid stepping out into the unpredictable, deep peat marsh at all times.
⏱️
Time needed
A typical scenic walk from the main settlement out to the Great Moss Lake and back usually takes around one to two hours, moving at a very leisurely, observational pace along the designated paths.
