Ohrada Zoo (Czech Republic)

Weather…

Hluboká Zoo, also known as Ohrada Zoo, is located in South Bohemia in the immediate vicinity of the magnificent Hluboká nad Vltavou Castle. Founded in 1939 by Adolf Schwarzenberg, it is one of the oldest zoos in the country. Originally conceived as part of the hunting museum in the Baroque Ohrada hunting lodge, the zoo has evolved to specialize in the fauna of the Palearctic region, with a strong emphasis on native Czech species. Spanning approximately 4.5 hectares (visitor area), the zoo is home to about 300 animal species. Particularly noteworthy are its successful breeding programs for European otters, white-tailed eagles, and various owl species. The zoo is picturesquely situated on the banks of the Munický Pond, allowing for the natural integration of waterfowl. In recent years, the facility has been modernized and expanded with new exhibits, including sections for Australian fauna and tropical reptiles. Through its educational programs and proximity to the castle, it serves as a major cultural and tourist hub in the Budweis region.
