Křivoklátsko Protected Landscape (Czech Republic)

Weather…

The Křivoklátsko region in Central Bohemia is a unique forest landscape, recognized as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1977. The 628-square-kilometer area is defined by the deep, winding valley of the Berounka River, which carved its way through Paleozoic rocks. Unlike many other Czech forests, Křivoklátsko consists largely of near-natural deciduous mixed forests, particularly oak and beech stands. This diversity supports an enormous range of wildlife, including over 1,800 vascular plant species and numerous endangered animals such as the black stork and the eagle owl. Historically, the area served for centuries as a royal hunting ground for Bohemian kings, which helped preserve its continuous forest character. The region's center is dominated by the monumental Gothic Křivoklát Castle, one of the oldest and most significant castles in the country. Today, the area is protected as a Landscape Protected Area (CHKO), with ongoing efforts to elevate parts of it to national park status to further safeguard its valuable ecosystems.

📅
Best season
Spring and autumn are widely considered the most beautiful seasons for hiking among the dense deciduous trees. Summer is typically favored for leisurely canoeing and camping along the gentle riverbanks.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The landscape consists mostly of deeply incised river valleys, rocky outcrops, and rolling hills heavily blanketed by ancient woodlands. Most walking trails are generally composed of natural forest dirt and gravel.

What to bring
Comfortable hiking shoes and insect repellent are generally recommended when exploring the dense, damp forest environment. Water enthusiasts typically need basic paddling gear if venturing onto the slow-moving river.
