Eagle Mountains (Czech Republic)

Weather…

The Eagle Mountains (Orlické hory) stretch along the Czech-Polish border in Northeastern Bohemia and are part of the Sudetes mountain range. The highest peak is Velká Deštná at 1,115 meters. Since 1969, a large portion of the range has been protected as the Eagle Mountains Protected Landscape Area (CHKO Orlické hory), covering 204 square kilometers. The landscape is defined by a prominent ridge, deep beech forests, and the easy on the eye valleys of the Wild and Quiet Orlice rivers. Historically, the region was heavily shaped by border defense, reflected in the massive concrete fortifications from the 1930s, such as the Hanička artillery fortress. The area has preserved its original rural character with many traditional wooden cottages. Ecologically valuable are the mountain meadows home to rare orchid species and the peat bogs along the ridge. Today, the Eagle Mountains are a popular destination for cross-country skiing in winter and hiking or cycling in summer, with the 'Jiráskova cesta' ridge path connecting the main summits.
