Buchlov Castle (Czech Republic)

Weather…

Buchlov Castle stands atop a prominent hill in the Chřiby Mountains of southeastern Moravia and is one of the oldest royal castles in the Czech Republic. Established in the first half of the 13th century, it was built as a strategic fortress to guard the borders and trade routes of the kingdom. The castle's architecture is a complex blend of Romanesque, Gothic, and Renaissance styles, reflecting centuries of continuous development and expansion. A notable feature is the castle chapel, which was modeled after the Sainte-Chapelle in Paris. In the 19th century, the Berchtold family turned the castle into a repository for their extensive natural history and ethnographic collections, which even include Egyptian mummies. Buchlov is unique for having avoided significant destruction throughout its history, allowing its monumental medieval structure to remain largely intact. Today, it serves as a museum showcasing the lifestyle of the Moravian nobility and the region's rich historical heritage.
