Beroun is a royal town in the heart of Bohemia, strategically located at the confluence of the Berounka and Litavka rivers. Founded in the late 13th century by King Ottokar II, it served as an important stop on the trade route from Prague to Pilsen. The historic center is defined by two monumental town gates (the Prague and Pilsen gates) and well-preserved remains of the city walls. Beroun acts as a gateway to two major nature reserves: the Bohemian Karst and Křivoklátsko. A unique attraction is the bear pit on Městská hora hill, home to live bears, which are the town's symbols. The town is also famous for its pottery tradition, celebrated annually with a large pottery market in the main square. Beroun blends its medieval history with a modern quality of life and is a popular starting point for water sports on the Berounka River as well as for hikers visiting the nearby Karlštejn and Točník castles.
