Soli was one of the ten ancient city-kingdoms of Cyprus, located on the northern coast overlooking the Morphou Bay. Traditionally, the city was redesigned and named in honor of the Athenian statesman Solon during his visit to the island in the 6th century BC. Soli reached its zenith during the Roman period, leaving behind a wealth of archaeological treasures, including a magnificent theater and a vast early Christian basilica. The Roman theater, dating back to the 2nd century AD, once accommodated up to 3,500 spectators and provides impressive views of the Mediterranean. The basilica is renowned for its intricate floor mosaics, most notably the 'Swan of Soli,' a masterpiece of early Byzantine craftsmanship. The city's wealth was largely derived from the nearby Skouriotissa copper mines, with Soli serving as a vital export port for the strategic mineral. It remained a significant episcopal see until the 7th century AD, when frequent Arab raids forced the inhabitants to abandon the city, leaving its grandeur to be rediscovered by modern archaeologists.
