Vouni Palace (Cyprus)

Weather…

Vouni Palace stands majestically on an isolated hilltop 250 meters above the northern coast of Cyprus, offering panoramic views of the Morphou Bay and the sea. Built around 500 BC during the period of Persian domination, the palace is believed to have been commissioned by the pro-Persian King of Marion to maintain surveillance over the nearby Greek-aligned city of Soli. The architectural layout of Vouni is unique, blending Eastern-style courtyard designs with Classical Greek structural elements across more than 137 rooms. These rooms included royal residential quarters, administrative offices, workshops, and sanctuaries, most notably a temple dedicated to Athena. The palace’s history was brief yet intense, ending abruptly in 380 BC when it was burned to the ground by the people of Soli during a local uprising, never to be inhabited again. In 1928, Swedish archaeologists discovered the 'Vouni Treasure,' a cache of gold and silver jewelry and coins, which highlighted the site's immense wealth. Today, the extensive foundations serve as a silent witness to the political tensions and artistic synthesis that defined ancient Cyprus.
