Kyrenia Castle (Cyprus)

Weather…

Kyrenia Castle dominates the eastern end of the town's historic harbour and stands as one of the best-preserved fortifications in Cyprus. While its foundations date back to Roman times, the current structure is a synthesis of Byzantine, Crusader, and Venetian architectural layers. The 16th-century Venetian remodeling was particularly significant; they drastically thickened the walls and added massive circular bastions to counter the threat of heavy artillery. Within its walls, visitors can find a small 12th-century Byzantine chapel and the renowned Shipwreck Museum. This museum houses the remains of a Greek merchant vessel from the 4th century BC, discovered off the Kyrenia coast in 1967. Over the centuries, the castle has functioned as a military stronghold, a royal residence during the Lusignan period, and a state prison under Ottoman and British rule.
