Frourio Castle (Cyprus)

Weather…

Larnaca Castle, commonly referred to locally as the Frourio (Fortress), is a significant medieval defensive structure located at the southern end of the famous Finikoudes promenade. The original fort was likely established in the 12th century by the Byzantines to protect the strategically vital harbour from pirate raids. Under the rule of the Lusignans and later the Venetians, it underwent several reconstructions and reinforcements. The massive stone structure seen today mostly dates from 1625, when the Ottomans rebuilt the fort to counter maritime threats. During the British colonial era, the castle served as a police station and a prison, with executions being carried out within its courtyard until 1948. Today, the fortress houses a small, informative museum displaying artefacts from the region's Christian and Islamic history. Visitors can explore the heavy ramparts and historical cannons, while the central courtyard now serves as a venue for open-air theatre and cultural festivals. The view from the battlements provides an impressive perspective of the harbour and the Larnaca coastline.
