Dervish Pasha Mansion (Cyprus)

Weather…

The Dervish Pasha Mansion is one of the most splendid examples of 19th-century Ottoman residential architecture in Nicosia, located in the historic Arabahmet quarter. The building was constructed in 1801 on the foundations of an older medieval house and once belonged to Dervish Pasha, the publisher of the first Turkish newspaper in Cyprus. Architecturally, the mansion features the typical construction style of the period: the ground floor is built of solid stone, while the upper floor consists of a lighter timber-frame construction with overhanging balconies known as 'cumbas.' These enclosed wooden balconies allowed residents to watch the street below while maintaining their privacy. Since 1988, the meticulously restored mansion has served as an ethnological museum, providing a deep insight into the daily life and culture of the wealthy population during Ottoman rule. The rooms are furnished with historical pieces, traditional costumes, and household artifacts that bring the social fabric of the era to life. The idyllic inner courtyard, with its central fountain and surrounding galleries, has an atmosphere of tranquility and elegance typical of the upper-class residences of that time.
