Church of St. Kassianos (Cyprus)

Weather…

The Church of St. Kassianos is situated in the historic Chrysaliniotissa quarter of Nicosia, one of the oldest inhabited parts of the capital located directly on the demarcation line. The current church building was erected in 1754 on the foundations of an older structure, serving as a significant example of sacred architecture from the Ottoman era in Cyprus. It is dedicated to St. Kassianos the Roman, a Christian saint of the 4th and 5th centuries. Inside, the church houses precious religious artifacts, most notably an extraordinary silver-plated icon of the saint dating to 1782 and a richly carved wooden iconostasis. The church's location in very close proximity to the UN Buffer Zone has made it a symbol of the local community's cultural endurance, as it continues to function for worship despite the city's division. Its single-aisle architectural design and simple exterior contrast with the magnificent icons and relics found within, which attract pilgrims from across the island.
