Ston City Walls (Croatia)

Weather…

The City Walls of Ston, located on the Pelješac Peninsula, are a monumental feat of medieval engineering and are recognized as the longest fortification system in Europe. Construction began in the 14th century by the Republic of Ragusa (Dubrovnik) to protect the valuable salt pans of Ston, which were a primary source of wealth for the city-state. The wall system connects the settlements of Ston and Mali Ston across a steep ridge, originally stretching over a length of seven kilometers. The complex featured 40 defensive towers and five main fortresses, with Fort Kaštio serving as the most significant stronghold. The walls were built with exceptional durability, allowing them to withstand major earthquakes and centuries of conflict. Today, much of the wall has been restored and is open to visitors, providing panoramic views of the geometric salt pans and the Bay of Mali Ston, famous for its oyster farms. As a major historical landmark, the walls of Ston represent the strategic and economic importance of the former Ragusan Republic.
