Sea Organ (Croatia)

Weather…

The Sea Organ in Zadar is a globally unique experimental musical instrument that converts the energy of sea waves into sound. Completed in 2005, the structure was designed by architect Nikola Bašić as part of the redevelopment of the city's waterfront promenade. Beneath a series of white marble steps lie 35 polyethylene pipes of varying lengths and inclinations, divided into seven separate groups. As the waters of the Adriatic Sea push into the resonance chambers, air is forced through the whistles, resulting in random but harmonious chords that evoke whale songs or sacred music. The project is an outstanding example of merging modern architectural design with the natural environment. It has turned Zadar into one of Croatia's premier tourist destinations and was honored with the European Prize for Urban Public Space in 2006. The sounds vary continuously depending on the tides, wind strength, and wave size, ensuring a completely different acoustic experience during every visit.
