Rakalj is situated on a hill above the eastern coast of Istria, offering spectacular views of the Kvarner Gulf and the Raša bay. The village is primarily known in Croatia for two things: its long tradition of pottery (rakaljski lonci) and as the birthplace of the famous writer Mate Balota. His birthplace is now a memorial museum depicting Istrian life at the beginning of the 20th century. Below the village, right by the sea, lie the ruins of the old castle Stari Rakalj and the beautiful small church of St. Agnes (Sveta Agneza). This spot is a favorite motif for photographers and a destination for hikers, as one of Istria's most beautiful coastal paths starts here. The trail leads along secluded coves with white pebbles and turquoise water. In Rakalj, Istrian tradition is still strongly preserved. Every year, folklore events and festivals in honor of local saints take place. Gastronomy is based on seafood, game, and the famous Istrian truffles. Rakalj is well-suited for travelers seeking a combination of culture, history, and untouched nature, far away from the large hotel complexes of the west coast.
