Prokurative Split (Croatia)

Weather…

The Prokurative, officially known as Republic Square, is one of the most striking public spaces in Split, characterized by its Neo-Renaissance architecture. Constructed in the mid-19th century under the visionary Mayor Antonio Bajamonti, the square was inspired by St. Mark's Square in Venice. The prominent red buildings with their elegant arcades enclose the square on three sides, while the southern side remains open to the sea and the Riva promenade. Originally planned as a cultural hub, the Prokurative once housed the grand Bajamonti Theater, which was tragically destroyed by a fire in 1881. Today, the square is best known as the venue for the annual Split Music Festival, one of Croatia's most prestigious cultural events. The wide, open area provides a sharp architectural contrast to the narrow, ancient alleys of the nearby Diocletian's Palace. With its numerous cafes and restaurants, the Prokurative serves as a popular social hub for both locals and tourists.
