Large Onofrio's Fountain Dubrovnik (Croatia)

Weather…

The Large Onofrio's Fountain is one of the most famous landmarks in Dubrovnik, located just inside the Old Town entrance behind the Pile Gate. Built in 1438 by the Neapolitan architect Onofrio della Cava, the fountain served as the terminus of a complex twelve-kilometer aqueduct system. This technical masterpiece secured the city's water supply from the springs at Šumet and was considered an extraordinary engineering feat for its time. The structure features a distinctive 16-sided polygonal shape and is adorned with 16 artistically carved masks (maskeroni) from which water flows. Although the fountain was heavily damaged in the devastating earthquake of 1667 and lost much of its original elaborate sculptural decoration, its monumental structure was preserved. Today, the fountain is a popular meeting point for tourists and still provides fresh drinking water to visitors. It stands as a symbol of the advanced urban infrastructure and public health awareness of the Republic of Ragusa in the 15th century.
