The Land Gate in Zadar, built in 1543, is regarded as the finest monument of the Renaissance in all of Dalmatia and marks the historical main entrance to the fortified city. Designed by the famous Venetian architect Michele Sanmicheli, the gate was constructed as part of a complex defensive system against the Ottoman threat. The architecture of the gate follows the model of Roman triumphal arches and is adorned with the winged Lion of St. Mark, the symbol of the Republic of Venice. Three arches define the structure, with the larger central arch intended for carriages and the smaller side arches for pedestrians. Located at the photogenic Foša harbor, the gate stands as a testament to Zadar's significance as the most important Venetian naval base in the Adriatic. Since 2017, Zadar's defensive system, including this gate, has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Today, it is not only a significant historical site but also one of the most photographed landmarks in the city.
