Land Gate of Zadar (Croatia)

Weather…

The Land Gate in Zadar, also known as Kopnena vrata, stands as one of the finest Renaissance monuments in Dalmatia and was completed in 1543. Designed by the renowned Venetian architect Michele Sanmicheli, the gate served as the main entrance to the city during the period of Venetian rule. It features a triumphal arch design with three openings, where the central large arch was intended for wheeled traffic and the two smaller side arches for pedestrians. The structure is adorned with various symbols, most notably the monumental relief of the Lion of Saint Mark, representing the Republic of Venice, and the city's patron saint, Saint Chrysogonus, depicted on horseback. This defensive structure was part of the extensive fortifications of Zadar, which were recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2017. The gate overlooks the small harbor of Foša and remains a perfectly preserved example of 16th-century military architecture, reflecting the strategic importance of Zadar.
