Church of St. Donatus (Croatia)

Weather…

The Church of St. Donatus in Zadar is the most significant pre-Romanesque architectural monument in Croatia and a world-renowned symbol of the city. Built in the early 9th century on the ruins of the ancient Roman forum, the structure is characterized by its monumental circular design and cylindrical shape. Originally dedicated to the Holy Trinity, it was later renamed after Bishop Donatus of Zadar, who commissioned its construction. A fascinating architectural detail is the use of Roman spolia; many columns and stone fragments from the forum were integrated directly into the foundations and walls of the church. The interior features a two-story layout with exceptional acoustics, making it a premier venue for concerts of medieval and Renaissance music. With its Byzantine-inspired design, it remains one of the best-preserved examples of circular churches from the Carolingian era in Europe. Today, the building is no longer used for religious services but serves as a museum and cultural landmark.
