Weather…

Raemaru is one of the most distinctive peaks on Rarotonga, serving as a powerful symbol for the Puaikura district. Rising 350 meters above sea level, this iconic flat-topped mountain is renowned for its unusual plateau summit. According to a popular local legend, the mountain was once much taller with a pointed peak, until warriors from the island of Aitutaki stole the top and carried it away to elevate their own land. The hike to the summit leads through lush tropical rainforest, culminating in a near-vertical rock face that requires the use of fixed ropes to navigate. Upon reaching the top, hikers are greeted by a vast, level plateau offering spectacular 360-degree views of Rarotonga’s western coastline and the encircling coral reef. The Raemaru Track is widely considered one of the island's most rewarding hikes, blending physical adventure with rich Polynesian folklore. The mountain’s geological formation provides a clear window into the volcanic origins of the Cook Islands, while its summit plateau hosts unique flora and serves as a tranquil vantage point over the Pacific Ocean.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The trail to this distinctively flat-topped mountain begins inland from Arorangi village on the west coast. The final approach to the plateau summit requires scaling a steep rock face using ropes typically left by local guides.
📅
Best season
Attempting the climb is safest during the dry season from May to October. Scaling the rock face is highly dangerous and often discouraged during the wet season due to slippery moss and continuous water runoff.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The hike starts on a gradual, rooted jungle track before morphing into a strenuous uphill climb. The final fifteen meters involve near-vertical rock climbing, requiring significant upper body strength to hoist oneself onto the plateau.
🎒
What to bring
Durable hiking footwear, gardening or climbing gloves for handling ropes, and a small backpack to keep hands free are mandatory. Bring ample drinking water and a small first-aid kit for inevitable scrapes on the rock.
🅿️
Parking
Vehicles can be parked on the grass near the end of the access road in Arorangi. As with many trailheads on the island, facilities are nonexistent, and visitors park informally on the roadside margins.
⚠️
Safety
You should inspect the fixed ropes thoroughly before trusting your weight to them, as they weather quickly in the tropical climate. The cliff edges on the plateau are sheer and unguarded; stay well back to avoid a fatal fall.
⏱️
Time needed
Reaching the base of the rock face typically takes an hour or more from the road. Including the final climb, time spent on the summit, and the descent, allow about four hours for the entire adventure.
