Penrhyn (Tongareva) (Cook Islands)

Weather…

Penrhyn, also known by its traditional name Tongareva, is the most remote and largest atoll in the Cook Islands. Located nearly 1,365 kilometers north of Rarotonga, it features a massive lagoon covering over 230 square kilometers, encircled by 53 small islets. The lagoon's total circumference reaches 77 kilometers, making it one of the largest enclosed bodies of water in the South Pacific. Penrhyn is internationally acclaimed for its rare golden pearls, which are cultivated in the pristine lagoon waters and serve as a vital part of the local economy. The people of Penrhyn are skilled navigators and are famous for weaving intricate 'rito' hats from coconut fiber. Because of its extreme isolation, the atoll has preserved a very authentic way of life, untouched by mass tourism. The deep passages into the lagoon allow large vessels to enter, a feature that has historically made Penrhyn a strategic maritime stopover in the vast expanse of the Northern Cook Islands.
