Manihiki (Cook Islands)

Weather…

Manihiki is a remote coral atoll in the northern Cook Islands, situated approximately 1,200 kilometers from the main island of Rarotonga. Often referred to as the 'Island of Pearls,' it is world-renowned for its production of high-quality black pearls. The atoll's deep, clear lagoon provides the excellent environment for the Pinctada margaritifera (black-lip pearl oyster), and pearl farming has been the backbone of the local economy for decades. Manihiki is composed of about 40 small motus that form a ring around a lagoon roughly 9 kilometers in diameter. The residents are celebrated for their traditional skills, including shell carving and the intricate weaving of rito hats from young coconut fiber. Due to its extreme isolation, Manihiki remains an untouched paradise, far from the typical tourist trails, offering an authentic experience of Polynesian life. Access is primarily by small aircraft or infrequent supply ships. For the adventurous traveler, it has unparalleled snorkeling in a pristine marine habitat and a unique look at the meticulous art of pearl cultivation.
