Tauhunu serves as the administrative and commercial heart of the remote Manihiki Atoll in the northern Cook Islands. Situated on the western rim of the atoll, the village is internationally acclaimed for its black pearl industry, which sustains the local economy. The deep, nutrient-rich lagoon provides the well-suited environment for the pearl farms where the famous 'Poe Rava' are cultivated. The settlement itself is characterized by its resilient coral stone architecture and a historic church that stands as a central community landmark. Because of its extreme isolation from the main island of Rarotonga, Tauhunu has maintained a strong sense of traditional Polynesian identity, where life is intimately tied to the rhythms of the Pacific Ocean and pearl harvesting cycles.
