Mitiaro (Cook Islands)

Weather…

Mitiaro, also known as Nukuroa, is the fourth largest of the Cook Islands and has a unique geological profile that sets it apart from its neighbors. The island is ringed by a wide belt of raised coral limestone known as "makatea," which forms a rugged, elevated plateau around the interior. In the center of Mitiaro lie two large brackish lakes, Te Rotonui and Te Rotoiti, which are home to the "itiki," a prized local eel and a staple of the islanders' diet. The landscape is dotted with subterranean limestone caves featuring crystal-clear freshwater pools, such as the famous Vai Nauri, which are excellent for swimming. Mitiaro’s small population lives primarily in a central village area, maintaining a traditional lifestyle focused on subsistence farming and fine weaving. Because it receives fewer visitors than Rarotonga or Aitutaki, Mitiaro provides an unparalleled sense of peace and a chance to experience authentic Polynesian culture in a landscape of fossilized reefs and tranquil inland waters.
