The Lesio-Louna Gorilla Reserve is a heartwarming and vital conservation project located just a few hours north of Brazzaville. Established in partnership with the Aspinall Foundation, the reserve is dedicated to the rehabilitation and reintroduction of orphaned western lowland gorillas back into their natural habitat. Visitors come here not only to witness these magnificent primates but also to support a crucial environmental mission that combats poaching and habitat loss. The reserve is home to a uniquely beautiful landscape, contrasting the dense gallery forests along the Léfini River with vast, open savannas and dramatic escarpments. Visitors can take serene boat rides along the river, which allows for safe, respectful observation of the gorillas that inhabit the forested islands before their final release. Hippos, diverse birdlife, and other small mammals can also be spotted along the riverbanks, adding to the safari experience. Accessible via a relatively decent road from Brazzaville, the reserve is convenient for an overnight trip, with basic eco-lodge accommodations available on-site. The dry season, running from June to September, gives the most comfortable temperatures and easiest road conditions. It is an inspiring destination that combines meaningful wildlife conservation with panoramic Congolese scenery.
