La Grille Mountain Range (Comoros)

Weather…

La Grille is the massive volcanic mountain range forming the northern half of Grande Comore (Ngazidja) island. Distinct from the active Karthala volcano to the south, La Grille is an older shield volcano characterized by a high density of cinder cones and pyroclastic craters scattered across its broad slopes. The summit reaches an elevation of approximately 1,087 meters above sea level, providing commanding views of the northern coastline and the surrounding Indian Ocean. Geologically, La Grille lacks a central caldera, reflecting a history of rift-style eruptions along multiple fissures rather than a single central vent. The mountain's porous basaltic rocks play a crucial role in the island's hydrology, as they absorb rainfall which later emerges as freshwater springs along the rocky shores. Much of the lower and middle slopes have been converted to agricultural use, where the rich volcanic soil supports crops like vanilla, cloves, and ylang-ylang. The remaining pockets of high-altitude forest serve as essential refuges for endemic bird species and unique flora. La Grille provides a rugged and diverse landscape for geological research and eco-tourism, showcasing the complex volcanic origins of the Comoros archipelago.
