Bandamadji, often known as Bandamadji-la-Domba, is a photogenic village in the southeast of Grande Comore (Ngazidja) Island. The settlement is located in the fertile Domba region, famous for its rich agricultural production and deeply rooted cultural traditions. Geographically, the village is surrounded by solidified lava fields from the Karthala volcano and simultaneously by lush greenery, reflecting the typical contrast of the Comorian landscape. Historically, Bandamadji played a role in the local power structures of the island's traditional sultanates. The village's architecture includes many buildings made from black lava rock, including impressive mosques and assembly houses (Bangwes). Inhabitants are known for their hospitality and the preservation of the 'Grand Mariage,' a complex social prestige system of the Comoros. Today, the village serves as an important center for local trade in agricultural products and as a preserver of the Shikomori language and culture in its purest form.
