Iconi is located on the western coast of Grande Comore, just a few kilometers south of the capital, Moroni. The town is one of the oldest settlements on the island and was once the capital of the Sultanate of Bambao. Iconi is famous for its dramatic coastal landscape featuring the prominent 'Falaise d'Iconi' cliffs. A tragic historical event in the 19th century still defines collective memory: to escape capture by Malagasy pirates, numerous women from the town threw themselves from these cliffs to their deaths. The architecture of Iconi includes significant historical mosques and the remains of royal residences that underscore the town's former status. Today, Iconi is an important center for handicrafts, particularly the production of traditional Comorian prayer hats (Kofia). Despite its proximity to the modern capital, Iconi has preserved its distinct character and deep-rooted traditions. The town also serves as a spiritual site, with several tombs of highly revered Islamic scholars attracting pilgrims from across the archipelago.
