Yerba Loca Nature Sanctuary (Chile)

Weather…

The Yerba Loca Nature Sanctuary is located in the Santiago Metropolitan Region of Chile, within the Lo Barnechea commune, protecting a high-altitude Andean valley. Established in 1973, the sanctuary covers approximately 11,575 hectares and features an impressive elevation gain from 900 meters to peaks exceeding 5,000 meters, such as Cerro La Paloma. The central feature is the Yerba Loca stream, fed by the meltwater of the La Paloma and El Altar glaciers. The ecosystem transitions from Mediterranean sclerophyllous forests in the lower reaches to Andean alpine steppes in the higher elevations. Wildlife includes the Andean condor, pumas, and several species of mountain raptors. The sanctuary is critically important for the water security of Santiago, as its glaciers serve as essential natural reservoirs. It is a premier destination for hiking, trekking, and mountaineering due to its proximity to the capital. Additionally, the area contains archaeological sites that evidence the historical presence of the Inca Empire in the Central Chilean Andes.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The dry season from November to March features clear skies and the best chance to spot condors soaring on thermals. Summer months bring heat and occasional morning fog, but foxes remain active throughout the year.
🌅
Best time of day
Early morning and late afternoon are optimal, when condors ride the thermal updrafts. Avoid midday hours as the heat causes a noticeable drop in animal activity.
📜
Etiquette
Maintain a minimum distance of 50 meters from condors and foxes to avoid disturbing them. Feeding wildlife is strictly prohibited as it disrupts their natural foraging habits.
🎒
What to bring
Binoculars or a spotting scope are essential for viewing condors on distant cliffs. Sturdy hiking boots with good grip are required for the rocky high-altitude trails.
🧭
Getting there
The sanctuary is about 40 km from Santiago, reachable by car via route G-21. A 4WD vehicle is recommended for the rough last stretch to the ranger station.
🦌
What to expect
Condors may not show up immediately; expect to scan the sky and ridges for extended periods. The altitude above 2,500 meters demands slow acclimatisation to prevent altitude sickness.
