Sewell Mining Town (Chile)

Weather…

Sewell is a former mining town in the Chilean Andes, renowned for its unique architecture and its location on a steep mountainside. Founded in 1905 by the Braden Copper Company, it served as a residence for workers of the nearby El Teniente mine, the world's largest underground copper mine. Due to the extreme terrain, the town was designed without roads for vehicles; instead, countless stairs connect the various levels, earning it the nickname City of Stairs. The colorful American-style wooden buildings stand in stark contrast to the rugged high-altitude landscape at over 2,100 meters above sea level. In its prime, Sewell housed up to 15,000 residents and featured state-of-the-art facilities like a hospital and a cinema. After the residents were relocated to Rancagua in the 1970s, the town was preserved as a historical monument. In 2006, Sewell was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list for its universal value as an example of a 20th-century planned industrial city.
