Guelta d'Archei is one of the most remarkable natural phenomena in the Sahara. Hidden deep within a gorge in the Ennedi Plateau, groundwater pools here and rarely dries up throughout the year. Nomads lead hundreds of camels into the canyon daily to drink. The dark water, tinted by camel dung, harbours the last known reproducing population of the West African crocodile in the central Sahara. The towering sandstone walls surrounding the guelta are also adorned with ancient rock art, depicting a time when this arid region was lush and green. Traveling to Guelta d'Archei constitutes a serious desert expedition. The site is accessible only via a multi-day 4x4 off-road journey from N'Djamena, requiring travelers to camp in the wild. There are absolutely no tourist facilities; all water, fuel, and supplies must be carried for the duration of the trip. The optimal window for undertaking this expedition is during the cooler Saharan winter months, from November to February.
