The Ennedi Plateau is a massive sandstone bulwark located in the northeast of Chad, within the Sahara Desert. Spanning approximately 35,000 square kilometers, this natural fortress was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2016 due to its unique geological formations and cultural significance. Over millennia, wind and water erosion have sculpted spectacular arches, deep canyons, and towering spires that characterize the landscape. The region serves as a vital refuge for Saharan flora and fauna, including the rare West African crocodile found in the Guelta d'Archei. Furthermore, the plateau is home to one of the largest ensembles of rock art in the Sahara, with thousands of images painted and carved into the stone surfaces. These artworks date back nearly 7,000 years, providing a detailed record of human life and the changing environment of the region. Today, the Ennedi Plateau remains a remote but crucial center for biodiversity and archaeological research in Central Africa.

Getting there

This remote plateau in northeastern Chad is extremely difficult to reach. Travel typically takes place as part of a guided, multi-day 4x4 expedition starting from N'Djamena or Faya-Largeau.

Best season

Visits are highly advised almost exclusively in the cooler winter months between November and February. In the summer months, the desert region becomes nearly inaccessible due to extreme heat.

Terrain & paths

The landscape consists of dramatic sandstone formations, gorges, and desert sand. There are no paved roads, only rough tracks and wild terrain meant for off-road vehicles and hiking.

What to bring

Full self-sufficient camping gear, vast amounts of drinking water, protection from intense sun and cold nights are indispensable. Sturdy footwear and emergency communication devices are absolutely mandatory.

Parking

There are no parking lots in the traditional sense here. Expedition vehicles park wherever the group sets up their desert camp for the night, mostly right in the valleys between the rocks.

Safety

This region requires absolutely professional logistics and experienced local guides, as there is no infrastructure far and wide. The dangers of dehydration and getting lost are extremely high in the Sahara.

Time needed

A visit is always a lengthy expedition that typically takes 10 to 14 days, including travel to and from the site through Chad. Several days are often spent exploring on the plateau itself.
