Guelta d'Archei (Chad)

Weather…

Guelta d'Archei is an ancient wetland and rock pool situated within the Ennedi Plateau in northeastern Chad. It is widely considered one of the most famous gueltas in the Sahara, formed by water accumulation in a deep sandstone canyon. The site is renowned for being one of the last remaining habitats for the West African crocodile in the Sahara, a relict population that has survived since the region was much wetter. The towering cliffs surrounding the water provide shade, significantly reducing evaporation and allowing the pool to remain permanent throughout the year. For centuries, the guelta has served as a vital watering hole for nomadic camel caravans crossing the desert. The surrounding canyon walls are adorned with prehistoric rock paintings, some dating back several thousand years, depicting cattle, human figures, and various wild animals. These archaeological remains indicate that the area has been inhabited by humans since the early Holocene period. Today, Guelta d'Archei is a symbol of the fragile balance between life and the extreme environment of the desert.
