Bouba Njida National Park spans over 220,000 hectares in Cameroon's North Region, characterized by Sudanian savanna and open woodlands. It was officially designated a national park in 1968 to protect its diverse fauna. Visitors travel to this remote area primarily to track the rare African painted dog, as this park is one of the few places in Central Africa where these packs can still be seen in the wild. The dry season, from December to April, is the optimal time for safaris, as animals congregate around the remaining water sources along the Mayo Lidi river. The park's ecosystem supports a significant population of elephants, lions, leopards, and various antelope species, including the massive Lord Derby eland. Birdwatchers can spot over 300 avian species within the reserve. The infrastructure is relatively basic, which provides a raw, authentic safari experience completely removed from mass tourism. The Bouba Njida tourist camp gives simple accommodations suitable for extended stays in the bush. Access is typically via the city of Garoua, which has a domestic airport, followed by a rugged 4x4 journey of about 250 kilometers. Local guides lead both driving and walking safaris, sharing their extensive tracking expertise. Meals at the camp usually consist of hearty local stews and grilled meats, reflecting the robust culinary traditions of northern Cameroon.
