Poli is the capital of Faro Department in the North Region and sits at about 600 metres elevation in a hilly landscape on the edge of Faro National Park, around 200 kilometres west of Garoua. The roughly 25 000 inhabitants are mostly Doayo (Namchi) and Koma, known for their initiation rites, distinctive ironwork and traditional mountain religion. The town is the gateway to Faro National Park, one of West Africa's largest protected areas, home to elephants, lions, giant eland antelopes and West African chimpanzees. The economy rests on sorghum, maize and groundnut farming, beekeeping and mining (gold in the Faro valley). Highlights include the ancient Doayo iron furnaces, the dramatic slopes of Mount Atlantika and the Mayo-Faro River. The tropical Sudanian climate with a marked dry season from November to April fosters open savanna and gallery forests.
