Wat Phnom (Cambodia)

Weather…

Wat Phnom is a Buddhist temple in Phnom Penh and marks the highest point of the Cambodian capital on an approximately 27-meter-high artificial hill. According to legend, the first temple was erected in 1372 by a wealthy widow named Daun Penh, who found four Buddha statues in a Kokia tree stranded on the riverbank. This discovery eventually led to the founding of the city of Phnom Penh, which translates to 'Hill of Penh.' The current main building, the Vihara, was renovated several times in the 20th century and is decorated with colorful murals depicting scenes from the life of Buddha and the Reamker epic. Behind the Vihara stands a large stupa housing the ashes of King Ponhea Yat, the ruler who moved the capital from Angkor to this location. The temple is a significant site for prayer and religious ceremonies, especially during the Cambodian New Year, Chol Chnam Thmey.
