Originally founded in 1442 during the reign of King Ponhea Yat, it is located in close proximity to the Royal Palace. The name translates to 'Temple of the Lotus Blossoms', referring to a former pond filled with lotus flowers that once graced the grounds. The pagoda is the seat of the Dhammayuttika Nikaya order and houses numerous tombs of prominent Cambodian figures and members of the royal family in magnificent stupas. The main sanctuary (Vihear) impresses with its colorful murals depicting the life of Buddha and its elegant architecture featuring typical curved Khmer roofs. The adjacent park is a popular meeting spot for locals, offering a green oasis in the bustling city center. As a center for spiritual education and ceremonies, Wat Botum plays a pivotal role in the religious life of the capital.
