Central Balkan National Park (Bulgaria)

Weather…

The Central Balkan National Park stretches across the highest and central part of the Balkan Mountains (Stara Planina) and is one of Europe's most valuable protected areas. Spanning over 716 square kilometers, it hosts nine nature reserves, with its ancient beech forests recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The landscape is defined by dramatic vertical cliffs, deep gorges, and the highest peaks of the range, including Botev (2376 m). It is also home to Raysko Praskalo, the highest waterfall in the Balkans at 124.5 meters. The biodiversity is extraordinary, with over 2,000 plant species, including numerous endemics, and rare animals like the brown bear, wolf, and golden eagle finding sanctuary here. The park features a well-developed network of hiking trails and mountain huts, making it a hub for sustainable tourism. Beyond nature conservation, it preserves the cultural heritage of mountain villages and the traditions of shepherds who have utilized the alpine pastures for centuries.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The national park is primarily accessed from various towns and villages along its northern and southern borders. Well-marked hiking routes and unpaved mountain roads lead into the protected area.
📅
Best season
The main hiking season typically spans from late June to September, when the highest alpine pastures are free of snow. Autumn paints the vast beech forests in animated, truly unforgettable colors.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The terrain is incredibly diverse, ranging from dense beech forests to expansive, rugged alpine pastures above the tree line. The paths can be exceptionally steep and physically demanding in sections.
🎒
What to bring
High-quality, waterproof hiking boots with excellent traction are mandatory for the rough trails. Always pack multiple layers of clothing and a windproof jacket, as mountain weather changes fast.
🅿️
Parking
Visitors generally leave their vehicles at designated parking spots near the main trailheads on the park's periphery. Do not attempt to drive off-road into the protected zones under any circumstances.
⚠️
Safety
The higher elevations are notorious for sudden, severe storms and rapidly dropping temperatures. Brown bears and other wildlife inhabit the forests, so stick to marked trails and never hike alone.
⏱️
Time needed
While a short walk might last a few hours, properly experiencing the national park usually requires multi-day treks. Most serious hikers plan for at least two to three days, sleeping in mountain huts.
