Balkan Valleys (Bulgaria)

Weather…

The Balkan Valleys, often referred to as the Sub-Balkan Basins, form a chain of eleven depressions stretching between the main ridge of the Balkan Mountains to the north and the Sredna Gora to the south. These valleys are of tectonic origin, formed by subsidence along major fault lines. The most notable include the Sofia Basin, the Karlovo Basin, and the Kazanlak Basin, the latter being world-famous as the 'Valley of the Roses.' Geomorphologically, the valleys are characterized by fertile alluvial soils and a gentle rolling landscape, drained by numerous rivers such as the Tundzha. Historically, they served as central east-west passages and were densely populated by the Thracians in antiquity, as evidenced by the numerous monumental burial mounds. The climate in the valleys is temperate continental, protected by the surrounding mountain ranges, which favors the cultivation of oil-bearing roses and lavender. Today, these valleys are both economic centers and significant cultural landscapes within Bulgaria.
